Mistake #2
They quickly decide on their plan design without fully understanding the impact of their decision.
When I was a kid, I was covered under my Dad's plan. He worked for the hospital and we had 100% coverage for our medications. I had asthma and I used to get 3 inhalers. One for my locker, one for my backpack and one for the home. They were free so I got as many as I could, why not?
Each inhaler was about $100. Because of me, $300 worth of claims hit the plan. The claims went up and the whole group felt the impact at renewal.
Eventually, the hospital decided to decrease the coverage from 100% to 80%. I now had skin in the game. With every inhaler, I had to pay $20 out of pocket. I went from getting 3 inhalers down to 1.
How did the claims change? The group used to experience $300 in claims and now, only $80. A small change to the plan design had a substantial impact on claims. And in turn, had an impact on my future renewal.
Plan design is something business owners often select too quickly and without enough consideration.
Your claims are influenced by your plan design. Carefully select your plan design, control your claims, and control your renewal.
